Oak Park Library (Large Meeting Room)

9500 Bluejacket St., Overland Park, KS (map)

  • The agenda and topics for this meeting have not been set yet. We are looking for speakers to share some of their specialized knowledge about R. If you want to volunteer to talk, leave a note below. We're looking for simple and informal talks about 15 to 30 minutes in length. Our regular meeting room is booked for every Saturday in September, so we are switching to the Glass Wall meeting room at the Oak Park Library (95th and Bluejacket).

  • Update: Our Schedule for the September meeting will include:
Crowdfunding updates from 2 local campaigns that are live:
Random Shirt Club & WYCO Shades
Plus, we are lucky to have Philip Hatterman, CEO & Agent of Innovation for Corkscrew Agency.  Phil will share his tools for identifying and leveraging your natural creative style and for maximizing the potential of your team.
Regardless of the career we have (or the one we want) we are all creatives. Every choice we make is a creative act. How we create is greatly affected by our natural creative style. If you don’t know your style or if you aren’t aware that you may have more than one, your creativity may suffer as you push ahead in a style that is frustrating, unfulfilling, and ultimately counter-productive.

  • Big data with Spring XD - by Spring Batch Lead Michael Minella

    Abstract
Big data is all the buzz these days.  However, the currently accepted toolset for working with Hadoop is painful to use and built on immature technologies.  Spring XD is a new Spring project that brings common Spring patterns to the big data world by using enterprise proven technologies.  In this talk, Michael Minella will provide an introduction to Spring XD, demonstrate common use cases, and discuss how to extend it for your own uses.
NOTE: The talk will only be available for attendees that show up in person. The only virtual attendee will be our speaker, Michael Minella.

  • Hello fellow data enthusiasts!
I am excited to schedule our next meetup and the topics are HOT!
As usual, we will have some networking time starting around 5:45 with pizza and beverages. One of the hot trending topics around which a lot of tech disruption is happening is the matter of using SQL over the data managed by the Hadoop stack. Many customers are asking why such a powerful language as SQL is restricted to relational. A senior engineer from IBM presents IBM's solution architecture to address this.
Also trending red hot is the NoSQL movement - an application friendly, web app development friendly, flexible data store. But is NoSQL for everything and everybody? If not, how do you objectively choose?

    1) BigSQL v3.0 - SQL on Hadoop without compromise!
Speaker: Uday Kale, Senior Engineer, IBM
    2) SQL, "No! SQL?" , "No SQL" - Living with Polyglot Persistence
    Speaker: Penton
     See ya all there!

  • KCWebCore is back!
We have decided we still need a web and mobile group in KC. To insure we almost don't survive again, we are going to form a Board of Directors. Here is what we are looking for.
Vice President - Also co-manager of the group and gets Adobe perks like software and access to NDA information. This person will also help put on events.
Secretary - Take pics of meetings and take meeting notes.
Tech Lead - Makes sure the group is heading in the direction the members want. Conducts surveys, keeps up with what is going on in the web and mobile world.
    3 general Board member slots.
If you would like to be considered, let me know. We'll vote for these slots in December for 2015.
As some of you know, I run the UX group, and We do a ton of interactive things. It is time KCwebCore does more of that.
Our next meeting will decide on a non-profit site to work on, and we'll all be able to contribute in making it. Something small this time and hopefully won't take us long to get done.
After that, the meetings are up to you.
See you all at our new meeting space, Google Fiber at State Line and Wesport Rd.

Matt Barr will present Django REST Framework: The Web API framework for perfectionists who like to take naps.
Some day in the future we'll all be enjoying a refreshing cup of Dippin' Dots on our space-porches reminiscing about all the quaint and rustic SOAP, WSDL, RPC, and other, stranger, formats we used to expose our web services with. Like Dippin' Dots (the ice-cream of the future), RESTful architectures have been around for awhile and will also dominate the web services of the future. With it's extremely successful Kickstarter last month, Django REST Framework is a prime platform to consider for you next set of web-services. In this talk we'll look at:
    • REST - how? why?
    • General structure of a Django REST Framework endpoint/system
    • How DRF ties in to the Django code you already know and love
    • Vastly better service documentation with DRF (how to quickly get the JavaScript guys excited)
    • Vastly better analytics with DRF + middleware (how to quickly get the architect excited)
    • Some honest gotchas
Andrew will present Learning Python Through Python Koans.
Python Koans is an interactive tutorial for learning the Python programming language by making tests pass.
Most tests are fixed by filling the missing parts of assert functions. Eg:
    self.assertEqual(__, 1+2)

which can be fixed by replacing the __ part with the appropriate code:
    self.assertEqual(3, 1+2)

Occasionally you will encounter some failing tests that are already filled out. In these cases you will need to finish implementing some code to progress. For example, there is an exercise for writing some code that will tell you if a triangle is equilateral, isosceles or scalene.
As well as being a great way to learn some Python, it is also a good way to get a taste of Test Driven Development (TDD).

We’ll explore ways to use InDesign, Illustrator, Muse, and other tools in the CC line-up that will make life easier when you need to communicate with clients and others. We’ll also talk about testing constraints, when to use which tool and how to improve workflow across the team.

  • Open to anyone in the area who is interested in developing video games. In order to have a little structure, we'll try to do a couple things each week:
    • Introduce new members. What have you worked on, game related or not? What do you want to work on next?
    • Discuss this week's conversation starter. Some article, video or game that we can dig into a little.
    • Members can present any games they're working on, for feedback or just to brag.
Of course, it's all very informal. The main goal is interesting conversation(s) about our passion.
    Looking forward to it!

  • Composing a Compiler - Jim Duey
Composition is powerful. Consider any artistic endeavor; any style of music, art, photography, etc. Creativity thrives on composition. The bringing together of various elements into a complementary whole. Carefully selected, simple pieces assembled with skill and insight can yield breathtaking complexity and beauty.

Yet we do not see composition widely used as a paradigm in creating software today. While it sounds nice in theory to write small, simple, and correct pieces of code and then plug them together, there is little in the way of practical examples to show how it's done. With practice, designing for composition can become second nature.

This talk will use the problem of writing a Clojure-to-C compiler as an example of this technique. A full explanation of the process, with code, will demonstrate how to accomplish this in Clojure.
    About the speaker
Jim started programming on an Apple 2+ in Basic and 6502 machine language.  He earned a BS in Computer Science from Rolla and started to work on Xenix-based control systems for sewer plants.  He has also worked on radio station automation systems, firmware for digital audio hardware, remote weather telemetry, camera control and video capture software.  Jim has worked in C and Forth until he finally found Clojure about 6 years ago.
    New Attendees
Welcome! This is an easy meetup to get involved with. There are no functional programming experience expectations or prerequisites of any kind, though some talks are more advanced than others. These events are generally well suited to help infuse functional programming ideas into an existing programming skill set.
    Location Details
The address is 4210 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Suite 400A.
C2FO offices are on the top floor of the same building in which Fairway, KS City Hall is located. This building is right behind Stroud's restaurant and LLKC attendees should be able to gain entry from any door.
