Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 12:00:00 AM Stowers Institute 1000 E 50th St, Kansas City,

Please join us for an evening of looking at the exciting past month of PHP news and learning about iterating over things. This will be the preview of Eric's revamped talk, based on feedback from December's presentation.

Light refreshments will be provided. Join us to meet new people, discuss PHP, and learn something new.

Our Evening Meeting Format

We love Web Development and all things PHP. Our meetings are often a little free-formed, but we shoot for this schedule:

6:00pm - Mingling / Meet and Greet

6:15pm - Lightning Talk: Last Month in PHP - John Kary

6:30pm - Presentation: Irritating Strings -- Iterating Things - Eric Poe
Arrays are beautiful in PHP. One can map them, reduce them, filter them, foreach them, and use them in generators. Strings, on the other hand, are mere shadows to the Array. One can, uh, input and output Strings, and, when brave, manipulate them. What makes Arrays so awesome and Strings so dull? Iterators.

In this talk, we'll look at the modest origins of the String and the basics of the Iterator. Then, we'll look at how we can make the String as awesome as the Array through the use of iterator interfaces.

By the end of this talk, you will know the origins of the PHP String and you will be able to extend your knowledge of iterating through a String to be able to iterate through customized objects.

Your topic here? Contact us to speak!

Rate the talks!

All Developers Welcome!

We understand Web Developers often come from all backgrounds, and many work in more languages than PHP. Whether you're curious and just starting out, dabble in PHP on the weekends, write custom PHP on a daily basis, work in a framework like Symfony, Zend Framework, Silex, Slim, Laravel, CakePHP or customize CMS products like WordPress, Drupal or Joomla; our goal is that you will find something new, useful and thought provoking.

Interested in giving a presentation to the group, or demoing something you're working on? Contact one of the organizers through Meetup or talk after a monthly meeting to sign up!

Park in the garage and enter the main building to the west of the garage. Follow the signs and turn right at the security desk. Click here for event

Open to anyone in the area who is interested in developing video games. In order to have a little structure, we'll try to do a couple things each week:

Introduce new members. What have you worked on, game related or not? What do you want to work on next?

Discuss this week's conversation starter. Some article, video or game that we can dig into a little.

Members can present any games they're working on, for feedback or just to brag.

Of course, it's all very informal. The main goal is interesting conversation(s) about our passion.

Looking forward to it!

Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 1:00:00 AM Kansas City Center for the Ink & Paper Arts 1427 W 9th Street, Kansas City, MO

We'll be hitting the road in February to make a field trip to the Kansas City Center for the Ink & Paper Arts, a community print shop in Kansas City's West Bottoms. It is a space run by printmakers to enable other printmakers and craftsmen to create their work. It offers equipment and space to independent artists not associated with a school, and a place where likeminded individuals can collaborate and dialogue. They want to include everyone that works with ink and needs access to a press or screen—this means book artists and those working with handmade paper. The KKCIPA not only offers a communal environment but also nurtures new growth of printmaking in the greater community through workshops, lectures, and exhibitions.

Come learn about this hidden gem in the West Bottoms!

Having trouble finding time to write your blog post. Me too.

I want to have a dedicated time to work on my blog post each week, I figured it would be great to schedule a time to blog and be with other WordPress people.

Let's get together and write and talk some, but be a support network to get our blog posts written.

This is not a help session, it is to post blogs.

This is not an information session, it is to post on your own website.

I plan on two in the morning and two in the evening per Month on Tuesdays or Wednesdays... Depending on my teaching schedule. Hope you to see you there.

NOTE - The library has free wifi. If you want a secure internet connection, bring your own hotspot - one will not be provided. The library does have secure computers right outside the conference 2 meeting room.

Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at 1:00:00 AM South Independence Branch - Mid-Continent Library 13700 E 35th St South, Independence, MO

Do you have an active, fully functional on-online WordPress site, but you can't seem to find the time, motivation, inspiration, ideas and commitment to help you get to the next level? If you answered yes, then you might be interested in joining with up to 3 other like-minded individuals as we work on making our websites better and more effective.

This group is for those who already know WordPress, and would like to meet with others who also want to make improvements to their website(s). The main focus will be working and improving your own website or blog, because it's just too hard to get it done at home. Hopefully, a change of scenery will help with the motivation, inspiration and creativeness. Individuals with blogs or fairly basic websites are the focus group.

Technically support or "trouble shooting", is not what this group is about. If you want a meetup like those, please let the organizers know.

To keep this a work focus group, it is limited to just 4 attendees. We will have a private study room that has room for 4, available in the Library. We will meet for 1 1/2 hours on a week by week basis. NOTE - The library has free wifi, but if you want a secure internet connection, bring your own hotspot - one will not be provided.

IMPORTANT: THIS IS PART 2 OF THE 2-PART CLASS. If you signed up for the PART 1 class, then we already automatically added you to this class.

Learn the art of knife smithing and create a beautiful damascus utility knife.

These are a long time favorite of our instructor.  A beautiful and compact knife based on a skinning knife that makes itself useful on a daily basis.

The wood grain pattern of damascus style laminate steel is highlighted by your choice of a variety of exotic hard woods for the handle.

On day 1 we will be shaping the knife in our workshop.  Learn to profile your knife, apply a bevel and create a blade. Apply intricate filework to the spine or add a hole for a lanyard. At the end of this class (or the beginning of class 2) we will heat treat our blades, and acid etch them to bring out the patterns in the steel.

On day 2 we will learn how to attach a handle with brass pins.  We will shape and finish the handles and finish and polish and sharpen the blades.

Have you ever deployed to production with a database password stored in plain text? Have you encrypted your database password, but then did not know how to store the encryption key securely? Are you certain you encrypted the password properly?

HashiCorp Vault is completely free and open source solution to securely manage secrets. It supports secret storage, key rolling, revocation of secrets, auditing, and much more.

In this talk Rob will demonstrate how Vault can make securely managing secrets easy. He will then demonstrate how Spring Vault can remove boilerplate code necessary to work with Vault.
