  • Hammerspace

    440 E 63rd St , Kansas City, MO (map)

  • This is a meet-up night for HammerSpace members that focuses on programming, soldering, Arduino or Raspberry Pi builds, Linux projects, robotics, 3D printers, and anything else tech related. Bring in your project to work on or just to show off to other tech-minded members.
We do not have any group learning activities planned at the moment, but we might have some for future Tech Tuesday nights after we figure out what people are interested in doing. These meet-ups are free for members of Hammerspace unless we have an organized group activity you want to participate in (such as soldering a provided electronics kit, etc)
We hope these meet-up nights bring our more tech-minded members together to network, socialize, and collaborate with each other, much like our art-minded members do during our Art Jam nights.

  • TEKsystems

  • Attending a lecture about Xamarin is great, but how about a hands-on lab BUILDING something instead? Bring your laptop and join the KC Xamarin Developers Group for our first hands-on lab building a Xamarin Forms application from scratch! To get the most out of this meetup you'll need Visual Studio -- the free Community Edition is just fine! -- with the Xamarin components installed (or Xamarin Studio Community, Pro, or Enterprise on Mac OS X). To make sure you have your computer set up correctly please walk through the Xamarin Forms quickstart tutorial to verify that you can run the PhoneWord app (or just download the completed code from Github).
    Space and food sponsor: TEKsystems
Note: if you are having trouble getting the PhoneWord app to run on your system, please message Mike Cerny via the Meetup group for assistance.

  • Greetings,
We have two presentations on the list:
    1) The first presentation deals with issues of accessibility and assistive technology in Linux. What's out there in the world of open source for people with disabilities? The scheduled talk includes a general look at assistive tech followed by some demonstrations of accessibility devices using the Raspberry Pi.
    2) "I don't know. I will come up with something." -Joey :-)
Should be a good time as always and I look forward to hearing what the presenters have as well as seeing all of you!

  • Tannin Wine Bar & Kitchen

1526 Walnut Street, Kansas City, MO (map)

  • Open to anyone in the area who is interested in developing video games. In order to have a little structure, we'll try to do a couple things each week:
Introduce new members. What have you worked on, game related or not? What do you want to work on next?
Discuss this week's conversation starter. Some article, video or game that we can dig into a little.
Members can present any games they're working on, for feedback or just to brag.
Of course, it's all very informal. The main goal is interesting conversation(s) about our passion.
    Looking forward to it!

Data visualization helps people understand the significance of data by placing it in a visual context:
how might it forward the efforts of a non-profit?

There’s an infinite number of ways data visualization could help non-profits’ causes.

Tableau, a leading data visualization tool, has a division that works exclusively with non-profits around the world as well as a social responsibility division that takes on causes.  One example of a non-profit data visualization project is the end malaria campaign below.

    http://datavizathon.com/

PATH and the Tableau Foundation wondered how data visualization could help us see a world without malaria and END MALARIA.

Visualized data was used to both understand information and make decisions, for example where bed nets are lacking and where to deploy diagnostics.

Right: This visualization shows malaria cases coming back between January and April (the rainy transmission season).

The height of the 2015 transmission season, when compared to other years, is significantly lower. The area in purple shows the percentage of cases detected by community health workers, which means detection and treatment  cases closer to the places where they first emerge.
