HUG Access SIG Meeting 6:30 pm, October 19, 2016, at JCCC, Regnier Center - 3rd Floor, RC 353

Presentation I:    Picture Database
Presenter:   Ray Killam
Description:     I guess I have always been interested in my family history. My Grandmother, Gertrude Killam, fostered this interest while I was growing up. She eventually gave me a hard copy document with names, dates, and a lot of other information going back to our American beginning. I kept this book for a long time, not sure what I was going to do with it.

In the 1990s, I discovered the Family Tree Maker software and made the commitment to enter all the information from the original book into this software. I was so impressed with its capabilities that I did further research. This led to the Daughters of the American Revolution library in Washington, DC, where I discovered more than 40 pages of hand-written names and dates in a “tree” structure. I added all these names.

I collected pictures from several family sources. Unfortunately, many of these pictures were of people who I had no idea who they were. No one kept notes or wrote on the pictures. All that historical information was lost. I at least kept the pictures together by family group so I could establish some relationships. Through a hit and miss effort, I was able to identify some of these people. I still have many unidentified people. The database prevents this from happening, going forward.
This effort made me realize the need to record detailed information before it was too late. That led to the development of my Photos database.

Presentation II:   Create a Table of Constants in your Queries to Enhance Analysis and Speed
Presenter:  Caren Grandgenett
Description:   Using a "Table of Constants" or a "Constant" in an SQL or Microsoft Access query allows us to run calculations that address and utilize one value over a data set.  There is no join between the "Constant" and the data so this is a technique that can be used to enhance analysis of data and make complex queries run more quickly.
