  • You hear Ruby on Rails everywhere, but do you know what it's all about? Ruby on Rails was released in 2004 as open source software; Convention over Configuration.
This will be a brief look at the new Rails 5. We'll show you how easy installation is, how quickly we can build a running app from the command line, create a database using SQLite, push code changes out to git and we'll deploy our app on heroku using PostgreSQL.
We'll look at some of the changes with Rails version 5; Action Cable, Puma, API mode, test runner, ApplicationRecord, just to name a few.
We'll explore some of the applications that were built with Ruby on Rails; Basecamp, GitHub, Shopify, Airbnb, Twitch, SoundCloud, Hulu, Zendesk, Square, Highrise, and more.

    Darlene Millard Mini-Bio:
Darlene has been in the IT industry for over 16 years. She has spent the majority of that time working on the network admin side in active directory, looking after backups, setting up computers, working weekends on upgrades, and all that monotonous stuff that is done on a daily basis as well as building & repairing computers.
A VB6 class from college sparked the desire to program. After an extensive brain stuffing from Centriq, she hit the ground developing and hasn't looked back. She enjoys learning new programming languages and learning in general. A recent course has given her the introduction to Ruby on Rails and thus was born this presentation.
In what spare time she has, she thoroughly enjoys riding her motorcycle cross country.
